Welcome to The FairlawnGigTM RFP Website.

FairlawnGig is a municipal broadband utility established by the City of Fairlawn that delivers a better Internet experience for residents, businesses and visitors to the Fairlawn area. Construction is underway.  The high-speed fiber network and carrier-grade wireless network will pass every home and business in the City of Fairlawn and the Akron, Bath, Fairlawn Joint Economic Development District (JEDD).

FairlawnGig is delivering an unprecedented level of Internet service—a gigabit fiber connection and Wi-Fi all over the City of Fairlawn.

On February 12, 2015, The City of Fairlawn issued a Request for Proposals (RFP) to solicit ideas on developing a public private partnership to design, build, operate, maintain, and finance FairlawnGig. The RFP process is now finished and the project is moving forward. Many excellent RFP responses were received from companies all over the country. However, none of the responses addressed the entire project. Instead of picking a single winning proposal, the City combined the best elements from a few different RFP responses; and is developing the FairlawnGig municipal broadband utility with a team approach.

On September 21, 2015, the Fairlawn City Council approved the next step in the development of FairlawnGig, which is the pre-construction planning phase. The City of Fairlawn assembled a team of private industry experts to create a detailed design for the network and develop a business plan for the operation of the FairlawnGig municipal broadband utility. Fujitsu Network Communications was awarded an Engineering Design Contract for this phase and they led a local team including: Roetzel Andress, the Environmental Design Group,  and PB Ventures Limited; through the network design and business planning process. This pre-construction phase concluded in January 2016. The City had a complete design for the FairlawnGig network and a plan for operating the network.

On April 4, 2016, the Fairlawn City Council unanimously voted to approve four ordinances that authorize the construction and operation of FairlawnGig, a municipal broadband utility that will make wireless and gigabit fiber optic internet services available to all residents and businesses throughout the City of Fairlawn and the Akron-Fairlawn-Bath Township Joint Economic Development District (JEDD).

Financing of the FairlawnGig network is being done through the issuance of revenue bonds by an agreement with the Development Finance Authority of Summit County.
